Where to Buy New and Used Law Books and Casebooks, Casebriefs and Law Study Guides and Aids.
We get lots of emails from all kinds of students about all kinds of problems. One that we have yet to address is where to get law books from good law bookstores.
We must say that the most important factor is you must find an honest law bookstore to purchase your materials from.
Our first bit of advice is to buy all the used law books and materials you can. If you can get what you need used from other students at your school do it. If you can, avoid buying from your local law school book store as they are usually run by Barnes and Noble, Follett or some other large company. The people who work in the school law bookstores know nothing about the materials they sell. The goal of these law bookstores is not to sell you what you need but to sell you all they can. And because of your anxieties about law school you will buy, buy and buy some more and most of what you buy will not be what you need. If you can avoid buying from school law bookstores.
We Found the Best Place to Get Your Used Casebooks, Law Outlines and Law Study Aid Products.
Here is how we did our research of which law bookstores to purchase from. We went online and searched for law bookstores. We placed orders with 14 different law bookstores. After receiving our orders we had to contact 4 of the law bookstores as they sent us the wrong materials. Since three of the four did not have phone numbers it was impossible to resolve any problems with those law bookstores.
Do not do business with a law bookstore that does not have a phone number. Of the 4 who sent the wrong materials, we got satisfaction from just one of them, the law bookstore we could call. However, it was immediately evident that the person taking orders at that law bookstore was not familiar with law books or law school materials.
Of the remaining 10, we took them up on the guarantees on their law bookstore sites. We then returned the books to each of the law bookstores telling them we made a mistake or we dropped the course and had not used the books. We got a refund from only one of the law bookstores, despite all having guarantees on their sites of no problem refunds the other 9 law bookstores ignored our requests even though all of them received the returns.
We eventually got refunds from the other nine law bookstores by having to report the transactions to Visa.
The one who did not give us any problems at all was the Law Bookstore in Anaheim California. We visited the Law Bookstore in February 2006 and we were very impressed with the owner's knowledge of all the materials and the very helpful suggestions made as we purchased more materials. We were told what materials were really good and what materials were marginal. He actually knows his stuff and went to law school!
There were a lot of used materials available at The Law Bookstore. We give them a 4.9 out of 5. Another independent law bookstore we found very good was Gibson's Books and Beans in Lansing Michigan but they don't have a web site.
If any of the other law bookstores that we looked at improve we will let you know. This report was written on April 10, 2006 and we updated the material on July 12, 2007 and there are no changes. We updated the materials again on April 10, 2008 and three of the online law bookstores are gone. We guess they went out of business. The Law Bookstore is still by far the best as of 2009. The Law bookstore is a very good company and is independently owned. The Law Bookstore is located in Anaheim, California.
