Amazon and Law Bookstores

Avoid the Scams on Amazon and save $1,000’s

Where and How to Buy New and Used Law Books and Casebooks, Case briefs and Law Study Guides and Aids.

In 2021 most of the independent bookstores are out of business. That is not good. You can find used casebooks on Amazon and that is good. We don’t like Amazon but there is no other choice. Buy used books when you can, don’t destroy them and get an Amazon reseller account and put them up for sale when you are done using them.

Never rent a book. You have to be born brain dead to rent a book with all the scams that are pulled when it comes time to return the book.

Amazon is a good place to go looking for what is available but once you locate a product make the small bit of effort and find the original publisher and buy direct from them. All books have the publisher’s name and you can locate their web site in seconds.

This alone will save you $100’s if not $1,000’s and may even get you some great deals that WILL NEVER be done on Amazon. Things such as no taxes and lower prices are very common. Most of Amazon’s much higher prices and costs are to charge you for the vast amounts of delivered but not received product (stolen by the buyer).

We know of three vendors that sell on Amazon and sell direct. When they ship a product on Amazon to an Amazon customer 2.2% of the products are never received. When they ship the same product direct from their facilities using the same shipping methods only .3% are never received. YOU PAY FOR THE CROOKS WHO BUY ON AMAZON.

It is estimated that convenience costs you 20% or more of the cost of a product. That is a steep price for YOU to pay for subsidizing all the crooks that use Amazon to run scams and all the convenience and security that Amazon alleges its provides.

Amazon provides you with absolutely no better protection than provided by your credit card company. In fact, it is simpler and easier to handle a real customer complaint through your credit card company than it is to deal with Amazon.

Another scam that Amazon runs is the shipping scam. They have expedited shipping that you pay a lot more for to get an item faster. Amazon is extremely careful to label what they call their shipping with words such as “standard and expedited.” These do not equate to such things as ground shipping from UPS or priority mail from USPS. They tie the moniker to the amount of time and not the method of fast or slow shipping. So if you pay for expedited shipping and you are just 2 miles from their warehouse or shipping location you are taken to the cleaners. They ship the slow rate and pocket a lot of money.

The other scam is “free shipping.” If anyone reading this actually believes in free shipping then you are a prime candidate for being brain dead or maybe you already are dead. You are an I D 10 T or what is commonly known as an idiot. Free return shipping is paid for by you. Free shipping is factored into the price. NOTHING IS FOR FREE. If those who return products all the time never pay for that shipping those who keep the products do with substantially higher prices.

If you are eyes wide open in using Amazon you can locate good deals on used books and find lots of products that are extremely useful and purchase direct from the vendors and save a ton of money.

There is no good advice or any kind of relationship you can establish with anyone at Amazon. You can get some great deals on used books and find lots of what is available for sale not found anywhere else. That’s where it ends.

We have also confirmed a rumor that bsmsphd.com is going to start selling casebooks along with a printed version of their case briefs to go with it for special pricing and establish the ability to resell the same materials after you are done with them. Buy from them, resell through them if the book is still in demand. Their main advantage is they do not charge taxes in 48 of the 50 states.

We left up the prior information we have posted about law bookstores but it still applicable to school bookstores.

We get lots of emails from all kinds of students about all kinds of problems. One that we have yet to address is where to get law books from good law bookstores.

We must say that the most important factor is you must find an honest law bookstore to purchase your materials from.

Our first bit of advice is to buy all the used law books and materials you can. If you can get what you need used from other students at your school do it. If you can, avoid buying from your local law school book store as they are usually run by Barnes and Noble, Follette or some other large company. The people who work in the school law bookstores know nothing about the materials they sell. The goal of these law bookstores is not to sell you what you need but to sell you all they can. And because of your anxieties about law school you will buy, buy and buy some more and most of what you buy will not be what you need. If you can avoid buying from school law bookstores.

Here is how we did our research of which law bookstores to purchase from. We went online and searched for law bookstores. We placed orders with 14 different law bookstores. After receiving our orders we had to contact 4 of the law bookstores as they sent us the wrong materials. Since three of the four did not have phone numbers it was impossible to resolve any problems with those law bookstores.

Do not do business with a law bookstore that does not have a phone number. Of the 4 who sent the wrong materials, we got satisfaction from just one of them, the law bookstore we could call. However, it was immediately evident that the person taking orders at that law bookstore was not familiar with law books or law school materials.

Of the remaining 10, we took them up on the guarantees on their law bookstore sites. We then returned the books to each of the law bookstores telling them we made a mistake or we dropped the course and had not used the books. We got a refund from only one of the law bookstores, despite all having guarantees on their sites of no problem refunds the other 9 law bookstores ignored our requests even though all of them received the returns.

We eventually got refunds from the other nine law bookstores by having to report the transactions to Visa.

The one who did not give us any problems at all was the Law Bookstore in Anaheim California. We visited the Law Bookstore in February 2006 and again in 2012. We were very impressed with the owner’s knowledge of all the materials and the very helpful suggestions made as we purchased more materials. We were told what materials were really good and what materials were marginal. He actually knows his stuff and went to law school!

There were a lot of used materials available at The Law Bookstore. We give them a 4.9 out of 5. Another independent law bookstore we found very good was Gibson’s Books and Beans in Lansing Michigan but they don’t have a web site.

If any of the other law bookstores that we looked at improve we will let you know. This report was written on April 10, 2006 and we updated the material on July 12, 2007. There are no changes. We updated the materials again on April 10, 2008 and three of the online law bookstores are gone. We guess they went out of business. The Law Bookstore is still by far the best as of 2009. The Law bookstore is a very good company and is independently owned. The Law Bookstore is located in Anaheim, California.

The Law Bookstore is still by far the best as of 2010. Most of the online stores are out of business and rightfully so. DON’T DO BUSINESS UNLESS A REAL PERSON ANSWERS THE PHONE.

2019 Update Sad to say but the Law bookstore is going out of business.

They still have inventory left so get it while you can.
